President Cantwell Shares Her Vision for WSU’s Future at the 2025 CougsFirst! Spokane Show

At November 7, 2025 CougsFirst! Show in Spokane, WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell took the stage for a fireside chat with Derek Deis 4 News Now that left Cougs across the room feeling inspired, proud, and energized for what’s ahead.
Speaking to a packed audience of alumni and friends, President Cantwell shared her vision for the future of Washington State University, one rooted not only in athletics and community but also in innovation, workforce readiness and academic leadership. She emphasized how the university’s mission spans students in the stands and students in the lab.
One message came through loud and clear: WSU is ready to step forward with confidence. Whether it’s upgrading facilities, building stronger alumni networks, or creating a more engaging game-day atmosphere, President Cantwell made it clear that every effort ties back to the same goal: showing the world the strength of the Coug Pride.
“Fan experience is a big part of why we physically go to a football game not watch it on TV,” she said of the WSU’s fan culture. “That sense of ‘I am at something cool. I am with people I like. I am having a team-based experience. My people are here.’ And then it just really allows you to feel good about what you’re doing.”
She also underscored how WSU is actively preparing for the future of work. A recent study from WSU’s Carson College of Business showed that nearly half of professional workers are concerned they’ll be left behind without learning how to use artificial intelligence (AI) in their roles. WSU News Cantwell pointed out that WSU must equip graduates not only for competition on the field but for innovation in the workforce.
The fireside chat offered more than a glimpse into upcoming plans; it reminded everyone in the room that WSU’s greatest strength has always been its people, and now extends into the realm of research, workforce pathways and innovation. As President Cantwell put it: when Cougs show up, great things happen.
